With the potential of strong storms and heavy rainfall expected to move across the state today, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is urging all motorists to use extra caution on the roadways. Many Alabamians are already traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday or running errands to prepare, and deteriorating weather conditions can increase the risk of crashes.
ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor emphasized the importance of safe, responsible driving during periods of inclement weather.
“Any time severe weather is in the forecast, we see an increase in dangerous driving conditions,” Secretary Taylor said. “Whether you’re heading out of town or just picking up last-minute items for Thanksgiving, we urge everyone to slow down, remain alert and focus on driving. One moment of distraction or a single unsafe choice can change a life forever.”
Safety Tips for Driving in Heavy Rain and Storms
ALEA reminds all motorists to follow these essential safety tips today and throughout the holiday week:
• Slow Down: Wet roadways can reduce traction and increase stopping distance. Lowering your speed is one of the most effective ways to prevent crashes.
• Use Headlights When Wipers Are On: If your windshield wipers are in use due to rain, Alabama law requires your headlights to be on as well to help you see and to ensure others can see you.
• Check Your Equipment: Ensure windshield wipers are working properly and replace them if needed. Also verify that headlights, brake lights and turn signals are functioning before hitting the road.
• Drive Defensively: Increase following distance, anticipate traffic flow and be prepared for sudden changes in road conditions.
• Avoid Sudden Braking: Slick surfaces make quick stops more difficult and can lead to hydroplaning. Brake gently and give yourself extra time to react.
• Buckle Up, Every Time: Seat belts save lives. Make sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained.
Stay Focused: Do not drive distracted. Put phones away, limit in-vehicle distractions and devote your full attention to the roadway.
ALEA Troopers across the state will continue monitoring conditions throughout the day and are prepared to respond as needed. The Agency encourages everyone to plan ahead, check local forecasts and travel with caution as storms pass through the state.
